Joint Mobilisation, Stretching & Mobility for Horses and Dogs

Mobilisation and stretches are performed within sessions to improve joint mobility, flexibility, movement quality and overall musculoskeletal function.

Where appropriate, selected exercises and stretches may also be prescribed between sessions for owners to perform at home in order to support treatment progression, enhance treatment effectiveness and maintain improvements between appointments.

These techniques can be beneficial for horses and dogs experiencing stiffness, reduced range of motion, muscular tightness, compensatory movement patterns or reduced performance. Treatments are always tailored to the individual animal following clinical assessment findings.

Joint Mobilisation & Passive Range of Motion

Joint mobilisation and passive range of motion techniques involve gentle, controlled movements applied to joints to help improve mobility and reduce stiffness.

Reduced joint mobility can contribute to compensation elsewhere within the body, altered gait patterns and reduced performance or comfort. These techniques may be incorporated to help maintain or improve joint range of motion, support flexibility and encourage normal functional movement, particularly following injury, periods of reduced activity or during rehabilitation.

Mobilisations and passive movements are always adapted to the individual patient and performed gradually within the animal’s comfort limits to ensure treatment remains safe, controlled and effective.

Stretching

Stretching techniques may be incorporated within the session including both active and passive stretches to improve flexibility, muscular extensibility and overall mobility.

Stretching is performed progressively and carefully to suit the comfort, flexibility and response of each patient.

Benefits of Mobilisation & Stretching

Mobilisation and stretching techniques may help to:

  • Improve joint mobility and flexibility

  • Reduce stiffness and muscular restriction

  • Improve movement quality and symmetry

  • Support normal biomechanical function

  • Reduce compensatory movement patterns

  • Enhance posture and performance

  • Support rehabilitation and recovery

  • Maintain long-term comfort and mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are mobilisation and stretching techniques?

Mobilisation and stretching techniques are used to help maintain or improve joint range of motion, soft tissue flexibility, and overall movement quality. These techniques are tailored to each animal and may form part of a wider physiotherapy treatment plan.

What conditions can mobilisation and stretching help with?

Mobilisation and stretching may be beneficial for animals experiencing stiffness, reduced flexibility, compensatory movement patterns, age-related mobility changes, or those undergoing rehabilitation following injury or surgery.

Will I be shown any exercises to continue at home?

Where appropriate, you may be provided with stretches, exercises, or management recommendations to help support your animal's progress between appointments and maintain the benefits of treatment.

Should my animal be warmed up before stretching?

Yes. Stretching is generally most effective when muscles and soft tissues are warm. Depending on the exercise prescribed, I may recommend a short walk, massage, heat pack or period of light exercise before performing stretches at home.

How often should I perform the stretches prescribed for my animal?

This will depend on your animal's condition, goals, and treatment plan. Specific guidance will be provided during your appointment to ensure stretches are performed safely and effectively without overloading the tissues.
