Electrotherapy Modalities

Electrotherapy modalities including photobiomodulation (laser), PEMF and heat therapy to support tissue repair, pain management, circulation and musculoskeletal recovery

Laser Therapy, PEMF & Electrotherapy for Horses and Dogs

Additional electrotherapy modalities will shortly be introduced as part of ongoing service development to further support rehabilitation, recovery, pain management and performance.

Electrotherapies are used alongside hands-on Veterinary Physiotherapy treatment plans and may be incorporated where clinically appropriate to support tissue healing, improve comfort and enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

Photobiomodulation Therapy (Laser)

Photobiomodulation therapy, often known as laser therapy, is a non-invasive treatment used to stimulate cellular repair, reduce inflammation and support the healing of soft tissue injuries.

Photobiomodulation may be beneficial for:

  • Soft tissue injuries

  • Tendon and ligament rehabilitation

  • Muscular soreness and inflammation

  • Muscular adhesions and trigger points

  • Wound healing

  • Pain management

  • Post-exercise recovery

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) is an advanced modality using electromagnetic fields to support circulation, reduce inflammation and enhance the body’s natural cellular recovery processes.

PEMF therapy may be incorporated to support:

  • Rehabilitation and injury recovery

  • Fracture repair support

  • Muscular discomfort and tension

  • Circulation and blood flow

  • Reduction of inflammation

  • Relaxation and recovery

  • Post-exercise recovery

  • General mobility and comfort

Thermal Therapy (Heat)

Thermal therapy involves the controlled application of heat to increase blood flow, reduce muscular stiffness and prepare tissues for manual therapy, mobilisation or exercise.

Heat therapy may be beneficial for:

  • Muscular tightness and stiffness

  • Reduced flexibility and mobility

  • Chronic tension patterns

  • Chronic stiffness and inflammation

  • Preparation prior to exercise

  • General comfort and relaxation

Ongoing Service Development

As part of continued professional development and ongoing service expansion, additional electrotherapy modalities may also be incorporated in the future, including therapeutic ultrasound, H-wave, NMES and TENS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is electrotherapy painful for my animal?

No. Electrotherapy treatments are generally well tolerated and non-invasive. Heat therapy provides a gentle warming sensation, while laser therapy and PEMFT are typically painless. Most animals remain comfortable and relaxed throughout treatment and will be monitored continuously.

What conditions can electrotherapy help with?

Electrotherapy may be beneficial for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including muscle tension, soft tissue injuries, joint stiffness, osteoarthritis, post-operative rehabilitation, and performance-related issues. Suitability will be determined during the assessment.

How long does an electrotherapy treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on the modality being used, the area being treated, and your animal's condition. Electrotherapy is typically incorporated into a wider physiotherapy session alongside assessment and other treatment techniques.

Are there any animals that may not be suitable for electrotherapy?

While electrotherapy can be beneficial for many animals, there are certain situations where treatment may not be appropriate. A thorough assessment will be carried out to identify any contraindications and ensure the chosen modality is safe for your animal.

Can electrotherapy be used alongside other physiotherapy treatments?

Yes. Electrotherapy is often used alongside manual therapies, massage, mobilisation, stretching, therapeutic exercise, and rehabilitation programmes to support your animal's recovery and overall wellbeing.
