Overview

Equine Physiotherapy at ADEC

We provide mobile equine physiotherapy for horses based at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club in Al Mushrif, treating your horse directly at their stable without the need to transport them elsewhere.

ADEC is one of Abu Dhabi’s established equestrian centres, with BHS-approved livery facilities, indoor and outdoor arenas and a busy programme of riding, training and competition.

With horses working across different disciplines and levels, physiotherapy can form an important part of maintaining movement, supporting recovery and managing the physical demands of regular work.

Each appointment is based around the individual horse. We consider their history, workload, movement, muscular development, previous injuries and any concerns raised by the owner or rider before deciding which treatment techniques are appropriate.

Who Is Equine Physiotherapy For?

Physiotherapy isn't limited to injured horses. Horses at different ages, workloads and stages of training can benefit from professional assessment and appropriate treatment.

Showjumping Horses

Jumping places significant physical demands on the horse through take-off, landing, turning and repeated collection and extension.

Physiotherapy can support mobility, muscular balance, flexibility and recovery while helping identify areas of tension or restriction that may affect movement and performance.

Dressage Horses

Dressage requires strength, symmetry, flexibility and controlled movement throughout the horse's body.

Regular physiotherapy can support muscular balance, mobility and range of motion while helping riders manage physical changes that can develop as training progresses.

Competition Horses

For horses training and competing regularly, physiotherapy can form part of an ongoing performance and maintenance programme.

Assessment can help identify muscular tension, asymmetry or changes in movement before they begin to have a greater effect on training or performance.

Riding-School Horses

Riding-school horses often work frequently and carry riders of different abilities, weights and levels of balance.

Physiotherapy can help support their ongoing mobility, muscular comfort and physical wellbeing alongside appropriate veterinary, farriery and management care.

Horses Returning from Injury

Following injury or veterinary treatment, physiotherapy may form part of a structured rehabilitation and return-to-work programme.

Treatment and remedial exercise can be adapted as the horse progresses through different stages of recovery.

Leisure Horses

A horse does not need to compete to benefit from physiotherapy.

Leisure horses can experience muscular tension, stiffness, reduced flexibility and compensatory movement in exactly the same way as competition horses.

Older Horses

Age-related changes can affect mobility, muscular strength and flexibility.

Appropriate physiotherapy and exercise programmes can help support movement, comfort and function as horses get older.

Young & Developing Horses

As young horses develop strength, balance and coordination, assessment can help identify areas where targeted exercises or management changes may support their physical development.

What can equine physiotherapy help with?

Equine physiotherapy can support mobility, muscular balance, flexibility, recovery and general comfort. It can also form part of rehabilitation programmes, return-to-work plans and ongoing maintenance for horses in regular training or competition.

Do you treat competition horses at ADEC?

Yes. We work with horses across different levels of training and competition. Treatment is tailored to the individual horse, taking into account their workload, discipline, movement and any specific concerns raised by the rider or owner.

Can physiotherapy be used after an injury?

Yes. Physiotherapy can form part of a structured rehabilitation and return-to-work programme following injury or veterinary treatment. Where a horse is already under veterinary care, treatment should be coordinated with the attending veterinarian where appropriate.

How often should my horse have physiotherapy?

This depends on the horse, their workload and the reason for treatment. Some horses may benefit from a short course of sessions during rehabilitation, while others may have periodic appointments as part of ongoing maintenance.

What happens during an equine physiotherapy appointment?

Each appointment begins with an assessment of the horse’s history, movement, muscular condition and any concerns you have noticed. Treatment is then selected based on the individual horse and may include techniques such as massage, myofascial release, mobilisation, stretching or other appropriate physiotherapy methods.
